The American auto industry was first battered by the bankruptcies and restructurings of the Detroit automakers, then hobbled by the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan - and severely disrupted sales of Japanese automakers in the American market. Although sales have not returned to pre-recessionary levels, automakers and dealers are now solidly profitable at the lower volumes.
